The Island – FAQ

1. What is the Island?
The Island is a fully plotted PvP LARP, with some cast to help push plot along. (Vaguely similar to Brassy’s Men in that regard, for those familiar with that game). It is not associated with any campaign. The genre is more or less "Supernatural Adventure/Horror". As to answering "What is the Island" in the game sense, you’ll just have to play to find out.

2. Can I play Mr. Roarke from Fantasy Island?
No. Nor can you play Hurley from Lost, or Dr. Moreau. It’s not a "write your own character" style game, like the Drink Deep series. The characters we write will be derivative of characters from our sources (see question 5), as well as stuff from our shared giant brain cell. There may be a character that bears some strong resemblances to Locke from Lost, but it will not specifically be Locke from Lost.

3. Is there Magic in the game?
Yes and No. There is no formal Magic System. There will be no characters that can fling fireballs and force blasts at others. Nor is there going to be any system by which characters can cast specific spells or rituals and get an expected result. There are however definitely supernatural elements in the game, things that are mysterious and hard to explain any other way. For example some characters may heal more quickly than others, or some may have visions they can not explain.

4. What rules system are you using?
We will be using a mix of things, depending upon the scene. There will be a few scenarios that involve boffer combat (with rules similar to those used in XPI and ARC), however we will make sure it’s clear beforehand, and folks will be asked on the character questionnaire if they want to be involved with boffer scenes. We most likely will use a rule similar to what the Threads campaign uses, in that a few players who are non-combatants (and clearly marked as such) may go along on a boffer combat scene to help with puzzle solving or healing.

We will *not* be using RTLB for non-boffer combat. There will be some non-boffer combat, however it will most likely be some sort of simple, fast system that is more theatric in nature.

Skills will be represented wherever possible with some sort of physical puzzle or challenge, with some modifiers or hints to allow for character skills. (eg playing Operation to pick a lock, but a “skilled” lockpicker would be allowed far more errors. I doubt we’ll use specifically that, but you get the idea.) Or reading an enciphered journal will be represented by reading an enciphered journal, though if your character is a cryptologist you may get some hints to decrypting it.

We’re still working out the details here, but I hope that helps.

5. What is your source material?
Well, at this point in the game we are still adding to the list. Note some of the sources just give us ideas for background or mood, and not necessarily characters. Here’s a sampling:

  • Lost (tv show)
  • King Kong
  • Mysterious Island
  • The Island of Dr. Moreau
  • Lord of the Flies
  • Pitcaern’s Island
  • Robinson Crusoe
  • Treasure Island
  • and other less defined things, such as certain elements of various world mythologies.
